TIPS for Elbow Bursitis Relief.

1. Is Exercise For Elbow Bursitis Helpful?

Often when we talk to individuals with elbow bursitis they are either continuing physical activities that may have initially contributed to the condition or they have begun an exercise regimen to strengthen the area in the hope of relieving the symptoms.

Unfortunately, exercise for elbow bursitis or other such physical activities only places more stress on the injury, resulting in further aggravating the condition.

While it is important to move around normally and not to be bedridden, you should listen to your body and ease off from any activity that is causing pain or placing stress on the elbow. This includes leaning the elbow on any hard surface.

In particular you should avoid any type of repetitive stress where possible. Even seemingly light repetitive movements if done continually over a period of time will cause irritation (such as long periods of use on a keyboard). Unfortunately ongoing irritation may lead to chronic bursitis in the elbow and subsequent formation of fibrous scar tissue. Further resulting in additional inflammation.

So if you enjoy exercise, sports or participate in any physical activity we suggest that you take a break from these activities. Remember that a little sacrifice up front can give a great reward in the end.

Now while exercise for elbow bursitis is not recommended while the condition is active, it may be useful once the condition has completely resolved to rebuild lost muscle mass and strength. This should be done gradually and in some cases it may be helpful to obtain guidance from a qualified physiotherapist to ensure you are doing this correctly.

2. Is Massage a Good Natural Treatment for Elbow Bursitis?

Many people that we talk to will have already tried deep tissue massage to treat their elbow bursitis. Unfortunately, this is one of the worst things that you can do as it will cause further irritation of the condition.

Unlike a muscular injury, which can respond well to massage, elbow bursitis contains inflammatory fluids which are encapsulated in the inflamed and swollen synovial lining of the elbow bursa. The problem with massage is that the fluid cannot be dispersed since it is encapsulated. Furthermore massaging directly over the bursitis will only further irritate the already inflamed synovial lining.

Massaging can however be extremely good for relieving areas where there is referred pain. Often people with elbow bursitis may experience pain in other areas of the arm, such as the forearm or shoulder.

If you are seeing a massage therapist it is a good idea to have discussion with them and request that they do not massage anywhere directly over or close to the bursitis. Any good massage therapist will have your best interests at heart and be more than happy to work with you to achieve the best outcome.

3. Should you be Applying Ice or Heat for your Elbow Bursitis Pain?

There is so much misinformation out there regarding treating elbow bursitis. Some people and websites suggest using ice for relieving bursitis elbow pain, while others suggest heat. So what is the answer?

When to use ice for treating elbow bursitis?

Ice should be used during the first 24-72 hours after you first become aware of the condition or if you accidentally knock or irritate the area. While ice can also be used to reduce pain by numbing the area, it is unlikely to have any further benefit in reducing the remaining swelling after the initial 72 hrs has passed.

When to use heat for treating elbow bursitis?

After the first 72 hrs has passed, then heat becomes the preferred option. This is due to the fact that heat promotes blood flow, which is necessary for the healing process. IMPORTANT: Do not use heat if an infection is suspected.

What are the Current Treatment Options for Elbow Bursitis?

For the first 24-48 hrs after the initial onset of elbow pain or the visible swelling due to elbow bursitis (olecranon bursitis) it may be appropriate to apply ice and then immobilize and rest the elbow (This should hopefully help minimize the initial swelling).

Unfortunately most people either miss this initial window to treat their elbow injury or their elbow bursitis still continues to swell and cause increased pain.

When this happens your doctor will normally offer either; anti-inflammatory medication, an injection with cortisone or aspiration of fluid from the elbow using a syringe assuming there is a visible lump (this is usually rather a painful procedure for the majority of people).

If you are currently suffering from elbow bursitis then there may be several reasons why you already feel that any or all of the above treatments are not really a viable option for you. This may include;

  • You have already tried one or more of these and they provided you little to no benefit.
  • You may not be able to take these medications due to age or a pre-existing medical condition.

Alternatively you may consider such procedures as being unnecessary, painful and invasive. Then again you may just prefer to first try and use a natural treatment for your elbow bursitis.

Fortunately… The OSMO Patch now offers an Intelligent Natural Alternative!

The OSMO Patch contains absolutely no steroids or drugs and they are completely non-invasive.

They have been intelligently developed using our patented design to naturally remove excess fluid from the body in order to reduce swelling and the associated pain.

Elbow bursitis

Great product!

I have to admit when I first applied the patch I was a bit skeptical, but after the first application the swelling in my elbow was greatly reduced and after about six applications the swelling was completely gone!

I have been free of bursitis for several months!

Bursitis in shoulder & elbow

Hi, I have had bursitis in my right shoulder for more than 3 years, after about 6 months of physio, I still have a lot of pain. About 14 months ago I developed bursitis in the left shoulder and elbow, which causes me very disturbed sleeps, I had treatment with an Osteopath, the pain subsided only temporarily

I have used 9 of your patches, 2 on my elbow and the rest on my shoulder, the improvement in my shoulder has been amazing, I still have a lot of pain but the movement has improving so much that I don’t hesitate in getting dressed as previously just pulling a T-shirt over my head was painful.

Thank you so much and I hope more people find your website. What a blessing.

Bursa in elbow

Dear Toky,

My patches arrived on Feb. 10th. I have now used 9 of the patches, wearing one sometimes during the day.

I have noticed significant results, although there is still some swelling in the bursa in my left elbow.

Swollen elbow almost half the size of a tennis bal

After noticing a swollen lump on my elbow almost half the size of a tennis ball, I visited my doctor who explained it was a bursa and could be drained but would likely re-occur. Like others, I found your website and decided to “give it a go” although being a little skeptical.

While waiting, my doctor drained it by needle, but it re-filled within 3-4 days as predicted. When the patches arrived, I immediately used them with skepticism. The next morning, I could not believe my eyes, it was covered with similar fluid as the doctor had removed and again after 3 more.

My elbow is now back to normal, and I have no hesitation in recommending them to anyone with similar problems.

Elbow bursitis

Dear Toky, this is to follow up on my last email.

After the 7th patch, the swelling began to go down. I did have to use all 10 patches, but by that time the swelling was gone and my elbow was back to normal.

So the patches did work, and I am completely satisfied. I would buy them again and recommend them to others.

Thanks so much.

Bursitis of the elbow, knee swelling & leg cramps

My husband healed his bursitis of the elbow with your patches. –

They are amazing, and he is now using 2 patches on each knee at night for knee swelling, and it seems to give him amazing relief from cramps in his legs that kept him awake throughout every night for years.

He has used everything from niacin to bars of ivory soap between the sheets.

Swollen elbow

Hello,

My name is Garry Gracey; I am a former HANDBALL CHAMPION. I banged my elbow while playing handball. It became swollen after a few days, and my family doctor recommended not to drain the bursa on the elbow but to have it take its natural healing course. “Being impatient” I googled and found OSMO Patches. They were AMAZING in such that after 5 applications of OSMO patches, the swelling on my elbow disappeared.

For a visual of the before and after, attached are the pictures.

Thank you very much,
