What is Achilles Tendonitis?

Overuse of the Achilles tendon (also known as the calcaneal tendon) is actually quite common and will usually lead to inflammation, swelling and Achilles tendon pain at the back of the heel. Achilles tendonitis is the name given to this condition and results from the irritation and inflammation of the large Achilles tendon in the back of the ankle.

Achilles tendonitis can sometimes be confused with another common but more severe injury of the Achilles tendon known as Achilles tendinosis. While Achilles tendonitis refers only to the inflammation and swelling of the Achilles tendon, Achilles tendinosis is actually a result of degenerative, microscopic tears within the tendon.

Causes of Achilles Tendonitis?

Achilles tendonitis is classified as an overuse injury and accounts for around 11% of all running injuries. The most common causes of Achilles tendonitis include:

  • Increase in running activity, this could include the distance, speed or intensity.
  • Not allowing enough recovery time between different activities.
  • Often a change of footwear can be a cause of Achilles tendonitis.
  • Weak or tight calf muscles.
  • Regular activities which requires the Achilles tendon to stretch more than normal such as running up a hill.
  • Overpronation or rolling in the feet when running.

Overpronation is the term given to the observation of feet that roll inwards excessively. While overpronation is extremely common it often is the cause of Achilles tendonitis.

Overpronation results in the lower leg being forced to rotate internally, placing a shearing force on the calf muscles.

Additionally, women that regularly wear high heels are also susceptible to developing Achilles tendon pain due to Achilles tendonitis. Overtime wearing high heels can shorten the tendon and calf muscles. The Achilles tendon can then undergo stress when jogging or walking for long periods in flat shoes. This occurs due to the Achilles tendon now stretching beyond its normal range.

What are the Signs & Symptoms of Achilles Tendonitis?

Common symptoms of Achilles tendonitis include:

  • Pain when walking or jogging
  • Pain walking up or down stairs.
  • Pain when placing weight on the heel.

Usually imagery including X-Ray and MRI may be used when diagnosing Achilles tendonitis.

Achilles Tendonitis Treatment?

Within the first 24-48 hrs of noticing Achilles tendon pain it is normally helpful to rest and ice the heel and ankle. The reason for this is to try and reduce the degree of swelling and inflammation in the Achilles tendon.

Achilles tendinitis is normally quite painful and disruptive. Hence along with analgesics for pain control your doctor will normally recommend that treatment from Achilles tendonitis includes anti-inflammatory medications or in severe cases he/she may even suggest a cortisone injection.

Some individuals will respond very well to anti-inflammatory medication or an injection with steroids. However these medications for many others will just not be an option and this may be for several reasons… including:

  • Having already tried anti-inflammatory drugs and steroid injections with little to no benefit.
  • Anti-inflammatory drugs and steroid injections might not be suitable due to age or a pre-existing medical condition.
  • Cortisone injections are generally painful and seen as invasive by many people.
  • Alternatively, some individuals may just prefer to try a natural treatment for relieving their Achilles tendon pain.

Regardless of which method is chosen, Achilles tendonitis treatment is best supported together with a strategy to protect and steadily build-up the strength of the Achilles tendon.

Such approaches may include:

  • Rest
  • Adjusting and balancing your body mechanics
  • Stretching your muscles
  • Strengthening your tendon
  • Using crouches,
  • Taping or strapping the heel and ankle,
  • Massage

Ankle and hips (trochanter bursitis)

Thank you very much.

I have used the patches on three areas with amazing results. One was on my ankle, 12 hours later the pain was completely resolved. The other two were on my hips for greater trochanter bursitis.

Both hips feel not completely pain-free, but a dramatic difference.

So thank you, and I have to say I am amazed.

Bursitis in the ball of the foot

Hi, I have had bursitis in the ball of my left foot for 2 months and it was suggested I have a cortisone injections. This freaked me out and decided to look online for a natural remedy and found these.

Well after 2 nights of the patches the pain and swelling have reduced a huge amount.

I am so impressed I will recommend this product to anyone who asks of the benefits.

THANK YOU FOR THE WONDERFUL, NATURAL TREATMENT.

Heel bursitis

Hi Toky, the patches are starting to offer relief for my son’s heel. He is finally looking on the bright side.

Over the past month, he has had 2 drainages, 2 cortisone shots, and referred to 2 different specialists. The end result was either an operation to shave the bone, reattach the tendon and be off his game for a season…..not his option.

So I started the patches on him that night. The next day relief was evident. We have used 6 so far and he can now feel the bone in his heel. It is still red, but nowhere as bad. Still tender, but not as painful.

Thank you so much.

Ankle (Achilles Bursitis)

About 2 years ago I developed bursitis on my right ankle which was extremely painful. I tried traditional physio, ultrasound, laser, and stretching to no avail.

I discovered the OSMO Patch website and decided to keep an open mind and try the OSMO Patch.

After all those months of continuous pain, much to my surprise, I experienced a significant improvement such that I can now walk several kilometers, and am not in constant pain all day long! I have now ordered a 3rd set of Patches, and am sure these will end the problem entirely.

Achilles Enthesopathy

I used this patch from yesterday.

My first patch application was wonderful. I feel no pain and discomfort on my retrocalcaneal area.

After removal of patch I could see some fluid or discharges like a chocolate color discharge on my applied area.

Bursitis in heel

Dear Wonderful Mediwise Pty. Ltd.

My brother bought your patches for the bursitis in my heel.

After the first patch on Tuesday, I saw no results. After the second patch, I was actually worse. Then while wearing the third patch yesterday, I was thrilled to see improvement…so much so that I cancelled the appointment that I had with the doctor…scheduled for today!

Now I’m using the fifth patch, and of course am anxious to see what the end of today will bring.

Sincerely.
