TIPS for Hip Bursitis Relief.

1. Are there any Exercises for Hip Bursitis that you Should or Shouldn’t be Doing?

Often when we talk to individuals with hip bursitis, they are either continuing physical activities that may have initially contributed to the condition or they have begun an exercise regimen to strengthen the area in the hope of relieving the symptoms.

Unfortunately, exercise for hip bursitis or other such physical activities only places more stress on the injury, resulting in further aggravating the condition.

While it is important to move around normally and not to be bedridden, you should listen to your body and ease off from any activity that is causing pain or placing stress on the hip.

In particular, you should avoid any type of repetitive stress where possible. Even seemingly light repetitive movements if done continually over a period of time will cause irritation (this including squatting and climbing stairs). Unfortunately, ongoing irritation may lead to chronic bursitis in the hip and subsequent formation of fibrous scar tissue. Further resulting in additional inflammation.

Also, it is important to avoid sleeping on the side of your hip bursitis and if possible try to sleep on your back as this will take a lot off pressure of the hip. Sleeping on the side of the hip can be one of the biggest contributors to prolonged hip bursitis.

So, if you enjoy exercise, sports or participate in any physical activity we suggest that you take a break from these activities. Remember that a little sacrifice up front can give a great reward in the end.

Now while exercise for hip bursitis is not recommended while the condition is active, it may be useful once the condition has completely resolved to rebuild lost muscle mass and strength. This should be done gradually and in some cases it may be helpful to obtain guidance from a qualified physiotherapist to ensure you are doing this correctly.

2. Is Massage a Good Treatment for Hip Bursitis?

Many people that we talk to will have already tried deep tissue massage to treat their hip bursitis. Unfortunately, this is one of the worst things that you can do as it will cause further irritation of the condition.

Unlike a muscular injury, which can respond well to massage, hip bursitis contains inflammatory fluids which are encapsulated in the inflamed and swollen synovial lining of the hip bursa. The problem with massage is that the fluid cannot be dispersed since it is encapsulated. Furthermore massaging directly over the bursitis will only further irritate the already inflamed synovial lining.

Massaging can however be extremely good for relieving areas where there is referred pain. Often people with hip bursitis may experience pain in other areas, such as the thigh or lower back.

If you are seeing a massage therapist it is a good idea to have discussion with them and request that they do not massage anywhere directly over or close to the bursitis. Any good massage therapist will have your best interests at heart and be more than happy to work with you to achieve the best outcome.

3. Should you be Applying Ice or Heat for your Hip Bursitis Pain?

There is so much misinformation out there regarding treating hip bursitis. Some people and websites suggest using ice for relieving bursitis hip pain, while others suggest heat. So what is the answer?

When to use ice for treating hip bursitis?

Ice should be used during the first 24-72 hours after you first become aware of the condition or if you accidentally knock or irritate the area. While ice can also be used to reduce pain by numbing the area, it is unlikely to have any further benefit in reducing the remaining swelling after the initial 72 hrs has passed.

When to use heat for treating hip bursitis?

After the first 72 hrs has passed, then heat becomes the preferred option. This is due to the fact that heat promotes blood flow, which is necessary for the healing process. IMPORTANT: Do not use heat if an infection is suspected.

What are the Current Treatments for Hip Bursitis?

A correct diagnosis from a qualified health care professional is important to properly identify that your hip pain is due to hip bursitis and not another condition.

Often hip bursitis is not considered at first as there are several conditions that can cause similar pain. Hence, diagnosis normally requires imagery such as an MRI to be conclusive.

There is very little that can be offered by your doctor other then painkillers (Analgesics), anti-inflammatory medication, or injection with cortisone steroid. On occasions some doctors may even suggest a procedure such as aspiration or surgery.

If you are currently suffering from hip bursitis such treatment options may not be suitable for you. This can perhaps be for several reasons… including;

  • You may have already used one or more of the above treatments with little to no benefit.
  • You may not be a suitable candidate for these types of hip bursitis treatments due to your age or a pre-existing medical condition.

Alternatively you may just wish to avoid painful and invasive procedures, opting to first try a natural treatment for bursitis in the hip.

Hip bursitis

Hello,

Just to let you know, I had bursitis so bad in my hip I was missing work.

A co-worker had some of your patches and told me how well it worked for him. In four days the pain in my hip was all gone.

I don’t know what magic is in those, but thank you.

Thank you so much for your reply,

My delayed response is also due to our holiday which, thanks to OSMO patch, was more comfortable!

I have recommended the use of these patches to several of my associates as I am very happy with the results.

Hip bursitis

Hi Toky,

I have received my patches and used one last night on my hip. It’s an absolute miracle!!

I have been suffering on and off for 3 years with Bursitis on my left hip. My GP has given me cortisone injections and anti-inflammatories, both of which have given some relief but not lasted and certainly not to this effect. I am due to have physio in the near future also.

I appreciate it has not cured the cause, but at least now I can work on that without the constant pain, and worse off all the lack of sleep.

A big thank you

Hip bursitis

I have been suffering from bursitis in my right hip since last August.

I saw your website and ordered 20 patches. I used a patch for 3 nights and didn’t notice much difference, and there was just a slight amount of fluid in the patches each night.

Last night I moved the patch a little and I couldn’t believe it this morning! The patch was soaked with fluid, so much that it was starting to ooze from the patch.

My hip felt much better this morning.

Thank you

Trochanteric Bursitis

Hello Jordan,

Thank you for your informative reply, I shall take notice of the hints and tips in your e-mail and will apply them during the treatment of my wife’s Trochanteric Bursitis.

It may interest you to know of the progress with the OSMO patches. Days 1 to 4 a small reduction in the swelling in the thigh. Days 4 to 7 a further reduction in swelling but no reduction in pain. Days 8 to 9 swelling almost gone and a big reduction in pain. We now await delivery of our second box of patches and hope the improvement continues.

Thanks for your assistance.

Hip bursitis

Hi, My 81-year-old mother has been suffering from hip bursitis for several years.

She got some relief from regular corticosteroid injections. However, the last time she had this treatment, the injection was not carried out properly and she was in agony for several days. Consequently, she has been frightened to receive this treatment again, and the pain was getting progressively worse. She had not been sleeping and could not walk far.

I found the OSMO website and thought I’d give it a go. My mum has just completed the first course of 10 patches, and she has a completely new lease of life. It really is amazing how quickly this treatment has had an effect. She has been sleeping much better and walked further at the weekend than she has for many months. I have ordered a further 20 patches. Many thanks.

Hip problems

Hi,

I had a sore hip muscle at the back of my hip. The Dr. said we will drain the fluid out then give you a Cortisone shot. I said no way my hip was so sore it was painful sitting and going up stairs.

I ordered your patches and the first night they came I applied it, the next morning the powder was hard, I guess from being wet. As soon as I stood on it, no PAIN, I woke up my wife and said it works.

It is still a little sore, when you sit. But it’s 99% better.

Trochanteric Bursitis

Dear Toky,

I wanted to let you know that the Bursitis Patches have worked on my Trochanteric Bursitis.

I cannot believe it. I do not have the pain or swelling there that I have had before. It is very cool. I just wanted to let you know that, also.

We will see if it flares up again. Thanks so much for answering my questions and caring about my daughter, also. It will stay with me for a long time.

May you feel blessed and loved. Have a great day!! Take Care!!
